I could care less about releasing the rhomboids in your shoulder.
I care much more about releasing the internalized pressure and anger that put the tension there in the first place.
Bodywork has the potential to work on the implicit memory, not just the explicit memory.
Explicit memory is the conscious things we remember and can recite as stories about our childhood and life to our therapist, our friends, and our loved ones.
Implicit memory is what our minds may have forgotten, but our bodies remember. It is the unconscious emotional memory that creates bracing, tension, and contraction in the body. We don’t fully have context or a verbal story for this type of memory.
We develop protective mechanisms when these reactions are triggered, including feeling overwhelmed and floating away and checking out, or we push and override ourselves to keep going, even when we feel panicked and unsafe.
Trained touch can bring coregulation, connection and presence to the areas of the body where implicit memory is held.
I like to say that my sessions are somatic-therapy informed. The lens I work through is one of tracking patterns of the body, of listening to the words women say and don’t say, and expanding awareness to when the body says enough but the mind wants to force or push. Sessions are focused on encouraging agency and active participation throughout the session with breath, visualization, vocal toning and other somatic tools.
I work in and out of depth and pressure so you can stay within your edges around the amount of sensation you can hold without wanting to check out. I ask for consent in the places that feel more charged and tender — whether that is your belly, hip, or throat.
Everything is at your pace and we work slow to integrate with care and awareness.
I have dedicated my own healing and career to learning how to navigate the terrain of the body. It is my greatest joy to be a part of your journey of landing back in your body with more ease, awareness and capacity.
