Knowing how to touch a body isn't the same as knowing how to hold a woman through healing.
Men have been at the forefront of many respected bodywork modalities —
John Barnes’ MFR, John Upleger’s Cranial Sacral work, Arthur Pauls’ Ortho-Bionomy, Jean-Pierre Barral’s Visceral Manipulation, Alexander Lowen’s Bioenergetics.
I have learned and experienced bodywork from highly skilled men who have dedicated their lives to perfecting their technique.
But something was always missing for me.
It wasn’t that they weren’t trauma informed — they theoretically understood trauma, even developed modalities around healing trauma.
They weren’t embodying what it meant to be a healer and steward of working with women who had sensitive and traumatized nervous systems.
During sessions I’ve had with male bodyworkers, they either turned the dialogue back on them and their studies, they would say comments that crossed boundaries as a spaceholder, or they would manipulate the tissue without feeling the impact it had on my nervous system.
They didn’t know how to hold the space for healing to happen because they were caught up in their own egos and experience.
They held these vast banks of knowledge of the body and could name every muscle and nerve and bone.
But they didn’t have sensitivity with the felt sense, the holding of the energetic and emotional impact, and the intuitive sense of subtle shifts of things in the body unnamed, unseen and unacknowledged.
I typically felt gaslight by my emotional experience when things were released through the body.
They didn’t know how to support women’s experiences of
systemic trauma that has chronically left us feeling deeply unsafe and decentered in our experiences.
Knowledge can change a body. Embodiment can change a life.
My path has been one of deep excavation work of the body. It’s been learning to hold boundaries, to trust myself, to get grounded and feel my center, to expand the capacity of my nervous system and listen to the intuitive sense of my body.
All this has been in service of my work as a healer so I can show up for my clients on the table and share bodywork in a healing space.
I share embodied work that not only changes the body structurally - but works with the deeper layers of the self and how you show up in the world.
Work that begins to unravel the nervous system and all its been holding, and gives your body the opportunity to learn how to trust and build safety from the inside out.
This work can change your life — not just your body.
