My clients ask me all the time - what do I do to not take on their energy?
They are worried about overwhelming me with their big emotions. They are worried that when I’m moving their energy (and burping a lot lol) that I’m somehow going to take on their “bad” energy. They are concerned for my well being in a space where they are meant to receive for theirs.
Healers that are ready to give as their full time job become their own anchors in their lives. They discover their center, who they are and what their own energy feels like without any outside influences. They learn to inhabit their bodies so that other people’s energy has no where to live in their fields.
I tell them the foundation of it all is personal boundaries.
As healers, we have to learn what’s our responsibility to take on and what isn’t. What’s ours to process and what’s ours to hold space for others to work through. While also simultaneously, we need to have proper energetic hygiene to clear our fields to continue to feel our centers at the end of a big work day. This includes cleansing with water of all kinds - showering after sessions, jumping in the ocean, spritzing your body and your space with cleansing waters. And smudging to burn the energies away that were cleared and that need to live elsewhere.
AND I also have hard and intense days when I’m struggling with my own internal world. As healers, we don’t have to be perfect and can’t always show up exactly how we want to sometimes for our clients.
And those days I learn to deal with my stuff first. Make extra space in the morning to process and breathe and feel and then put it on a shelf until my work day is over. Those days I feel more sensitive and porous and I hold both me and my client in the space — We can both exist and feel and process and we don’t have to have a self sacrificing attitude to be the ‘perfect’ space holder.
We have to feel centered so we can decenter ourselves enough to hold space for others to feel and move energy and heal. What we give to ourselves is a direct reflection of how we show up for our clients.
I don’t take on my clients energies because I trust in their innate ability to heal. I trust in their innate self guidance and power to move the process at their pace. I trust my intuition enough to know when to give more guidance and when to step back. And I trust that my goal isn’t to fix, to save, or to make them feel better.
My goal is to invite them into feeling their bodies again, to give them the space to melt, to breathe, to pause, to be guided back to themselves. Our healing relational container through touch is a powerful gateway into taking responsibility for themselves and their energy — where they can access their own innate freedom, power and contentment.
So no I don’t take on my clients energies or emotions. I feel it and track it with them, I give love and accepting language and space for them to feel the wholeness of them and dissolve back into loving their humanness.
Because we can thrive together and do work together that supports our healing and benefits everyone who’s in the field. We don’t have to be perfect to be impactful and can still be human, together and do our best to create spaces for transformation to happen.
