One of the most healing things I do isn't bodywork. It's reminding people they have a choice.
One of the most healing things I do isn't bodywork.
It's reminding people they have a choice.
They can ask for less or more pressure.
A slower pace. A pause.
To move to a different area.
To stay with an emotion. Or move away from it.
Because healing isn't about surrendering your power to an authority who thinks they know better about your body.
Healing is in reclaiming your power and body in real time connection with someone who honors both.
Women have been through enough experiences where they have been silenced, criticized, shamed or told that they were too much for having needs and desires.
This is a deeply engrained relational wound that should be at the forefront of awareness of all trauma informed bodywork sessions.
The culture of massage has widely been having clients be passive on the table and letting touch happen to them. This can reinforce trauma experiences for women and keep them stuck in a nervous system response that says I’m not safe, I can’t relax, I have to be hypervigilant and on guard and I don’t have a say in what happens. And this keeps the body in contracted and tight patterns.
In bodywork, yes practitioners know a lot and most do listen to the non-verbal cues of your body. AND ALSO, the client is having an experience of the work and should be encouraged to be a part of the conversation in what is happening in their bodies.
Collaborative bodywork that creates a safer space for transformation to happen involves explicit things to be said that encourages open lines of communication. Things like; pressure can be adjusted to more or less at anytime or when it feels too intense in an area, the attention can be moved to another place on the body. Emotions can be named and clients can choose to stay with it or not, depending on their capacity in the moment.
Personalized and communicative care requires creating a relational space for the client to feel like their needs matter. Their preferences, their voice, and their power is included in sessions where their bodies and all the layers of them are involved. In order for them to feel like they can actually melt, explicit containers needs to be created and permissioning and reminders are always encouraged.
Because your innate sense of your body deserves a voice on the table and needs to be acknowledged so healing can actually happen.
